3M pays $2B for Monroe-based safety products firm

3M Co. has agreed to buy Scott Safety from Johnson Controls Inc. for $2 billion, adding 1,500 employees and $570 million in annual sales. Scott, based in Union County near Charlotte, is among the nation’s largest maker of personal security products, including breathing and gas-detection equipment. Key Scott customers include firefighters and oil and gas companies. Maplewood, Minn.-based 3M is one of the world’s largest manufacturing companies.
