Amazon-Whole Foods deal adds fire to Charlotte grocery wars

Online retailer Amazon.com’s decision to buy upscale grocery chain Whole Foods Market is expected to heat up competition in Charlotte’s already aggressive grocery-store industry. The $13.7 billion deal escalates Seattle-based Amazon’s push into the grocery business and is a boon to Texas-based Whole Foods, which has three stores in the Charlotte area and has struggled against competitors Publix and Harris Teeter as they increase their offerings of high-end products.
