N.C. attorney general among Duke Energy coal ash skeptics

Although a formal “yes or no” decision is probably months away, Duke Energy Corp.’s plan to charge customers for a significant chunk of its coal ash cleanup costs already has attracted skeptics, including N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein, consumer groups and major industrial customers. Duke has yet to make a formal request for a rate increase, although company officials have said they plan to do so this year for at least a portion of the utility’s estimated $770 million in coal ash costs so far.
