UNC Health Care, CHS to create mega health system

UNC Health Care of Chapel Hill and Charlotte-based Carolinas HealthCare System have signed a letter of intent to join their clinical, education and research resources, creating one of the largest nonprofit healthcare networks and research centers in the nation. Combined, the healthcare providers will employ 90,000 and run more than 50 hospitals. UNC Health CEO William Roper will be the executive chairman overseeing the united operations, with Carolinas HealthCare CEO Gene Woods assuming the CEO role at the yet-to-be-named entity. The proposed deal awaits regulatory approval.
