UNC System’s leaders rush to stir it up

Is the UNC System Board of Governors missing the big picture? The board this week focused on controversial issues, such as the likely litigation ban at the UNC Center for Civil Rights and system President Margaret Spelling’s recent handling of issues surrounding the Silent Sam Confederate statue at UNC Chapel Hill. Various board members, mostly Republicans appointed by state legislators, also are proposing radical changes such as lowering tuition and fees (already among the nation’s lowest), reorganizing Spellings’ staff (she arrived less than two years ago), and moving system headquarters from Chapel Hill to a less bluish Triangle city.
