Vi Lyles to face Kenny Smith for Charlotte mayor

Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles has won the city’s Democratic mayoral nomination in an upset victory over Mayor Jennifer Roberts. Lyles, a former city budget director and assistant city manager, garnered 46% of the vote, winning in virtually every corner of the city. Roberts received 36% of the vote, with N.C. Sen. Joel Ford coming in a distant third. Lyles will face Kenny Smith, who won the Republican nomination with 89% of the vote, in the general election in November.
